Good question. My redfoot is 9 months old & almost 4" & there is nothing smooth about his shell. He was 2 months old when I got him & his shell was wrinkled looking. Now there is slight pyramiding as well as a notch above the rear scutes.

I think genetics has a lot to do with shell shape. Mine was a bargain because the breeder probably knew he wasn't a Grade A tortoise.
