: Just curious what substrate I should be using for pancake tortoises.

I would recommend you use carefresh. Carefresh is a non toxic paper product, not newspaper but a dunnage form of it that if consumed by your tortoise will not cause a long term ill effect. It really is one of the best alternatives I have tried, and my tortoises have never eaten it.

Pancakes live in rock crevices in the wild, so a tight area that they can squeeze into may benefit their well being also. Although not practical for most

: Also: If I have a female pancake tortoise that does not seem to be gaining weight and is the lightest of the bunch (1.3) should I isolate her and try to feed her on her own. I'm afraid maybe the others are eating her share or she is timid of chow time. If I had her on her own for a few months I could get her weight back up and hopefully see some growth.

How old is she? That may not be a bad idea, if she is the runt of the litter maybe you can track her progress.

Just a thought.

Ciao'

Giovanni
