Depending on the size/age of the tortoise it's possible that the scutes will flatten out as it grows.
Two of my sulcatas were pyramided when I got them.
Both are smoothing out nicely.
One was around 5 inches when I got it and quite severely pyramided.
All new growth is smooth and the pyramiding barely noticable now. Many of the previously pyramided scutes are now completely flat.
This sulcata is now around 12 inches.
The other one was 13" when I got her and not as pyramided. Now weighing about 60lbs the pyramiding is also barely noticable. Again most of the previously pyramided scutes are now flat.
My baby just over a year old is completely smooth
, he/she is just under 4". This sulcatas diet consists mainly of romaine and endive mixed with grass snipped daily from outside.
She/he also gets collards, hibiscus and turnip greens.
She spends time outdoors daily.
I believe that natural sunlight, plenty of room to exercise and a low protein diet goes a long way to preventing pyramiding.
