I wouldnt be happy with this with my tortoises. Its Roulette still! We need to look at the overall picture and dangers not some cases we know were OK etc. There are thousands of viral associated deaths in the literature and now we are getting some diagnostic tests to help us with this it seems sad if we dont distribute this information and help preserve these endangered animals.I cant pretend - the literature says mixing is very dangerous indeed. So do many of the sick tortoises at my Tortoise Clinic.

: It is depends on the species. I have seen leopards come down with herpes within weeks of initial exposure. They were exposed to "dirty" russian tortoises, by the 15 day mark, they had white ulcers in the mouth and runny noses. These were c.b. leopards that had been with my goodfriend since birth. I have also heard stories of Desert torts dying from viral infections carried by Russians in the course of a week. The symptoms seemed to indicate it was a herpes virus. As far as your reference on not mixing, I have not had access to that material send it to me and I will give you my two cents. But I feel if you put together 2 c.b. animals that are different species, you should be fine as long as you know the history on both animals. Obviously if one was kept at a pet store with "dirty" animals it would not be a good idea to mix, but if you get them directly from a reputable breeder problems should be virtually eliminated.
