: Fantastic pictures, Giovanni!! Thank you. How many tortoises do you have?

I have about 5 tortoises. Hard to say which one I like the best because each one has it's own dynamic personality.

The sulcata is much easier to take care of, and is smarter when it comes to seeking shelter from the elements...in effect more user friendly, but more aggressive in nature. Not saying that it will attack you (although some have been known to) but more in the ferousity in the way it eats.

The Leopard is a very gentle and calm in comparison. Also you need to keep an eye on them to make sure they are keeping warm and are not getting themselves in a "compromising situation".
This past summer I found one of mine in a puddle during a rain storm with just his head sticking above water, when a foot away was safe (not the sharpest tool in the shed). They are more suseptable to colds and runny noses then the sulcata, but like most tortoises will adapt to their environment quite well as long as they are being cared for. They say leopards don't do well in Florida, but mine are extremely healthy due to a varied diet and good husbandry conditions (they live in my kitchen during the winter months..haha).

The things you really need to think about regarding your choice is.

1. Where you live (How many outdoor months you can give them). Nothing is more important to the health and growth of a tortoise then natural sunlight.

2. What about ten years from now?
(That sulcata will be more then a cute tortoise then and very independant),can you lift a 40lb, 75lb, or 150lb tortoise?

3. Do you have a secure yard to keep them in?
(Can you plan and take care of grasses for them to graze on, without using chemicals to keep it growing?)

You should put on your thinking cap for a while on this one. Also go to this Turtle Homes link.

It would be hard for me to decide which tortoise I would rather have.

Ciao'

Giovanni
