With the demise of most of the US herp magazines except "Reptiles," and the reduction of the publication of herp related books (due to poor sales), there will be less and less available information appearing in print unless something is done. Granted, much information (some accurate - some not) is available over the Internet, but many books and magazines that offered worthwhile articles are no longer being purchased in sufficient numbers by herp enthusiats to justify continuing publication. If books (magazines) were offered at much lower cost by selling them on "CD," do you think this would be a feasible option that herpers would consider purchasing. Color photos in print and generally printing costs have gone up substantially, requiring the retail cost of the publications to increase. However, the use of a CD version will reduce the costs of production, allow for more color photos, and still can be printed by the purchaser (in total or in part) if the purchaser needs a hard copy.
If you think that you might consider purchasing herp (turtle/tortoise) books on CD as an alternative (to hard copy books), please respond by posting on this site or sending me an e-mail.
Having grown up on Ditmars (and others), having subsribed to all herp mags possible, having purchased a substantial library of herp literature, and having authored many herp articles (publications), I simply hate watching the "written word" head toward extinction.
I truly would like to hear from as many of you and your herp compatriots as possible. Then (based on your response) I will discuss the possibility of CD literature with the publishers with whom I have worked in the past.
Thanks in advance for your responses, and I hope you all have a great holiday season and happy new year.
