They retail for more than that; look at prices on the classifieds. Not everyone has direct access to 35 dollar tortoises. As a matter of fact, overall tortoise prices have risen in the last two years.

What I saw was emotive speculation; simply an opinion. Based on "ought to be" logic

You meant to say there are more in captivity than exist in the wild. Interesting, and I agree with this, but it is not helpful to John's point. Sadly, there are many species who's captive numbers exceed what remains of their wild counterparts, and this circumstance does not indicate a problem in captivity.
