I wasn't pulling numbers from thin air. Richard Fife, a sulcata breeder, stated in a recent Reptiles article on his ivory tortoises that an estimated 10,000 sulcata a year are hatched in the US. If you have a problem with those numbers, go talk to Fife.

Next time I'll list a reference section with my posts.

How many millionaires WANT a sulcata tortoise? Just because one has the money to take care of a tortoise properly doesn't mean that one wants to or WILL.

While I have don't have a problem with a person owning whatever animal they like, I have a problem with indiscriminate breeding of a species just to make a buck. There is also a problem with consumers who don't do thier homework before purchasing an animal, or who are unwilling to invest time and money to properly house and maintain that animal.

: "Let's face it, there just aren't 10,000 homes out there that can adequately take care of a sulcata."

: Marvy. The perils of the internet. We are viewing numbers simply plucked from the air, and formulating a view consisting of these numbers and tossing in a clueless opinion stated as fact. What will I be treated to next?

: Please tell us how many middle class homes there are in America? (you can round it off to the nearest million)
: Then please tell us how many homes have millionaires living in them. (you can round that number off to the nearest million also)

: I'll put it together for you:
: This does not mean that one need be a millionaire to have a tortoise. This is simply to demonstrate the hilarious porosity of your statement. We absolutely know a millionaire has the means to care for a tortoise, so your statement is already dead on arrival. But let's beat it further to death. I would combine the millionaire number with the number of middle class people that can care for a tortoise also. That number is in the millions too.
