hello ,
i appreciate your inquiry .
Opitunia cacti and its spineless cousin are perhaps the heartiest and prolific cactus that ive ever grown. each "pad" is capable of growing a new plant. The "berries" these cacti produce are consumed readily, as this is a desirable food source in the wild. It is worth noting here- that turtles in the wild actually enjoy the whole plant . Spines and all.
To flourish,it prefers lots of sun and well draining soil. but we have had many hard freezes in Texas. But through ice, drought even poor soil, this stuff thrives. Try it for your self, put a piece any where in your yard . check on it in a couple of months and you may have several plants growing out of a single neglected pad.
yes, you can grow this indoors . i suggest a plant spot light ( looks cool) or in front of a window will do.
Neglect is the key to these plants. Do let them dry out between waterings and fertilize twice a year. (I load the soil w/ lime stone powder to increase the calcium for my growing torts.)
this is not a big business . i have seen the prices for a mere cutting averaging @7.50 a cutting. And good luck finding the spineless variety.
a pound of this cacti usually is 3-4 pads.
My cactus is pesticide free and naturally loaded with vitamins, calcium and fiber.
Prices are as follows:
1 pound 15.00
2 pounds 25.00
Spineless variety :
1 pound 30.00
-shipping and care sheets included on all orders-
(Texas residents please add sales tax)
