I have used plain old garden center/gas station cypress mulch for terrestrials for many years. It is cheap (about $3 a large bag), attractive, heavy enough to stay in place and hides the mess well. Only problem is that it seems not to be readily available on the West Coast, where an alternative mulch must be used. For the information of you Westerners, this is not the Cypress you have on the coast. This is the Baldcypress that grows in swamps in the southeastern US.
