A greek (Testudo graeca), Russian (Testudo horsfieldi(sp?))Hermans (Testudo hermanni), Redfoot (Gechelone carbonaria) are some of the 'easier' tortoises. If you start of with a hatchling you can keep any of these easily in almost any container for a good number of years. As time goes on and you learn more I'll bet you'd be inclined to 'move on up' in terms of enclosure. I'm pretty sure that's how most of us started. These guys/gals are nothing like lizards or snakes. Monitors come the closest to these in personality but then you don't have to worry about a tortoise ripping your arms up or taking off a finger(not usually). The work in keeping a tortoise is the most of all the reptiles but the rewards are also the greatest.
