: < Glad to see that someone has been allowed into Afghanastan, Uzbekastan and the other neighboring countries(natural range of said torotise) and has been able to see first hand a tortoise burried just under the surface of the tundra during -40 degree F weather! Amazing! ;) Seriously though, one point every one seems to forget is that these animals are no longer in their native habitat, free to take whatever instinctual actions they need to make for survival. The game is greatly changed when they come into captivity. It has been written, by the people who have done the limited studies that exist for this species, that these tortoises utlize small deep caves and abandoned animal burrows that can extend meters under ground. Makes a hell of alot of difference in -40 degree F weather to have that much earth between the tortoise and the elements. Of course I read this in a book so I should probably just blow off this info. --Sharon
