one of the techs i work with works at an exotic animal practice said that the vets there didnt like to use amikacin, and other medicines from that class of drugs because of the possible nephrotoxicity. i think the main concern would be with animals that have compromised renal function. what does your star have? there are other antibiotics out there too. mine seems to be responding fairly well to an initial dose of gentamicin, with baytril and cephalozin given every other day afterwards. the same technician told me they like to use "Fortaz" as well. there seems to be a wide range of opinions among vets, and i'm at a loss, as to who's right, who's wrong, or are there just a wide range of remedies that all have varying degrees of effectiveness. good luck. btw, those are some AWESOME stars in the pictures you posted.
