This is absolutely true! the vet that treated the SREL gopher tortoises had never treated a tortoise before and was working from her mammalian medicine background. I would always recommend checking out a vets reptile credentials before trusting a valuable animal to them. Another option, if possible, is to contact the vet for the nearest Zoo, they are typically far more competent when it comes to reptile medicine ... if their zoo has a reptile house etc. For me the bottom line is that I avoid injecting baytril when I need to treat a tortoise and opt for amikacin. If amikacin doesnt; seem to be effective I try clafrin, all under consult with my vet who is very knowledgeable about reptiles
