In Reply to: Can Russians eat it....more posted by Dani on December 06, 2001 at 12:55:30:
I purchased some recently to feed my russians and my bell's hingeback.
Four of my five russians will eat it, but not with great enthusiasm. It needs to be mixed in with other items. The fifth russian took one bite of it and spent 10 minutes wiping its mouth.
The hingeback sort of likes it.
All of them will eat RepCal Adult Iguana food with more enthusiasm. And the Iguana food has only slightly more protein (16% vs 15%), about the same fiber (18% for both), and less fat (1% vs 3%).
My russians really prefer weeds, greens, etc to any canned item. I only give them canned stuff when the weeds die out.
The RepCal does have some fruit fiber content to it, but both products seem to be basically the corn/wheat/oats/soybean stuff that most of the canned tortoise foods are made of. And both have too much protein to be used exclusively for herbivorous tortoises.
I'd say that if you can get your russians to eat some good weeds (dandelion, clover, etc.) and some greens, keep that up and add in some canned stuff only now and then if needed to round out the diet.
