my point is this- would you want to take the chance on pellets when it could kill your tortoise? even though lots of people use them without a problem, there's a chance that the same will happen to yours. the death wasn't coincidental, he got an infection from eatin the moldy pellets, it was proven.
as for calicium sand, i'm extremely sensitive to dust and i never noticed any dust, even when pouring it into the enclosure. Maybe you got an old bag or something. I don't know anything about lizzard litter, i never used it, i have had friends how did and they never had a problem. I don't see how a water bowl is a recipe for disaster, what if he gets thirsty, and you don't offer him any water until the next day? at least offer water every day! whether he's soaking or not, he should still be able to drink if he wants to.
: I have used rabbit pellets for years with no problem. I suspect the before mentioned death was just coincidental. Lizard litter and calcium sand are way too dusty for tortoises. In fact they are too dusty for most animals causing eye infections and upper respiratory problems. I also would not use a water bowl, I soak my baby tortoises every other day in cool weather and daily inside or in etreme hot weather. Water bowls are a recipe for disaster.
