: No, you don't HAVE to, but if your tortoise is healthy, (has been for at LEAST one year) has good weight, good appetite, has been checked (and treated) for internal parasites, then you can hibernate it. A lot of keepers are afraid to hibernate..since we think in human terms. To many people it seems scary, but to a healthy Russian tortoise, it's normal protocol..they do after all spend roughly 9 months of every year underground. I just dug up one of mine, he was nearly 4 FEET deep....took me all day long digging out the entire enclosure to find him...and he was as happy as a clam way down there. I hibernate in a box with shredded and crumpled paper, and place the box in an unheated room. All of my Testudo (including Russians) are hibernated.
