It takes a tortoise several years for the shell to harden. This is still a very little kid...who has years of growing to do. THe bones of the carapace and plastron will take time to fuse...
Since this tortoise is getting outside, calcium is OK but added vitamin D3 is not needed (only used for a tortoise that is not getting natural sunlight.

: I have a question regarding baby sulcattas--- What is the approximate age when their shell should harden? Mine is approx. 4 months old and the shell is still a little soft, it can be slightly depressed on both top and bottom. This guy gets calcium supplements 4 times/ week and has UVB active heat bulb, 7% UVB flourescent lighting and gets outside at least 4 times/week for at least 20-30 minutes. My first guess would be calcium defiency, but i think that has been covered. Any suggestions/critiques would be beneficial! thanks in advance.
