I have a very healthy Russian tort that I am about to hibernate for the very first time. I plan on cutting of the food next week. I have the fridge ready to go at 40 degrees and everything. The photoperiod is 9 hours; the temps in the basking spot have been reduced to 80 degrees or so (from 92).
Well he's not buying it. I'll take him outside into 60 degree weather so he'll get it into his head what time of year it is, but even then, he'll eat anything. Just the other day he tried to eat his new thermometer! And no, he is not underfed. He has a nice, solid weight (and the vet seemed to agree).
I'm just a little uncomfortable about cutting off food then plopping him in the fridge if he doesn't seem to want to. What should I do?
Also, should I cool him for a day or two before directly putting him in the fridge? Like in the garage (which is around 60 degrees)?
