These Tortise's are protected by Flordia Law. Check out this link. http://www.saj.usace.army.mil/pd/gopher.htm

: I was up in venice for the weekend and discovered two gopher tortoise borrows...and later two gopher tortoises. One had these two big spike like things coming out from under his neck where the shell is usually flat..and one just had a square shell. Was that a pair? And also...i found the burrows near houses and was later informed that the "well off" people on the island dont like them livivng around because then they cant land scape? So whats stoping them from harming the tortoises when they dont want them there anymore? Does anyone know of any organizations in fl that protect them ? I'm worried that due to the tortoises inconvinience to the property i found them on ... that the new owners might harm them. And yes those people are that stupid, they would get rid of them so that they could landscape. I know its really sad. Ok byes!
