Substrate for sulcata yearlings

Hi,
I was wondering what some of you for substrate for your sulcatas? I'm hoping to find something that isn't so messy and they won't destroy! To start out with, I had them on newspaper, didn't work too well. Then I bought them "cage carpet" you know, the kind that isn't sapposed to unravel, tare, and animals are sapposed to be unable to eat it, well, that didn't work either! They tore it all to shreds and I even saw them trying to eat it! Now they are on rabbit pellets (alfa alfa), it seems to work ok, but when they get it wet from tracking over it after soaking, it is a real mess and they stay dirty. So, what works for you guys? All info will be greatly appreciated!
