I am not supporting the HSUS, I am trying to bring you folks into reality. It may be salmonella this week, but whats next. Most americans do not care if herptoculture gets banned, it does not affect most people. Banning cars, alcohol, dogs, etc. does affect enough people to raise issue. What do people think of when you say dog, probably man's best friend, not a vicious, dangerous animal, but if you say reptile people cringe, not all people, but enough. Banning herps probably won't anger that many americans. I am positive if an HSUS type group really took on the American herp community, they would have enough ammunition to get reptiles banned from private ownership, just look at the war non smokers are waging on smokers, in my area smoking is illegal in most public areas, I am sure there are more smokers than herpers, yet their rights are being ignored or changed. They could show the public dozens of dead or dying reptiles confiscated from an importer, they could show pictures of a gentle 20 foot burmese python eating a rabbit and ask "do you mind this living in your neighborhood, it could be right next door" The ammunition is out there and so called herpers have been handing it to the enemy for years. Eventually the tolerance will fade and disappear and our voices will fall on deaf ears. Reform now, lets develop legislation that restricts ourselves. The hobby needs to be brought under control. There are too many animals being ripped from their native range, Too many large pythons being sold to kids, too many reptiles dying in pet stores nation wide. Dogs and cats are not lost in such numbers. Irresponsible keepers do reflect negatively on all of us. Don't say they don't. As far as other countries treating animals worse, I am sure they do, but it is not an arguement worthy topic. I am discussing here and now, that is what is relevant. Maybe we should all stop for a second and reconsider what we put our animals through, maybe we should support those that work with animals out of love, not greed. Maybe we should have read all the books first, maybe we should splurge on a new cage, maybe our hobby will pull through. Maybe ...
