Alrite,

I started to get into tortoises last year and I bought a pair of young Russian Tortoises. I found that these are an exellent tortoise species for me to start with and now also have a pair of Leopard Tortoises.
Only thing is I buy my tortoises captive bred buy breeders in the U.K. as that where I live.

My Russian Torts are very lively and I keep them inside, but I let them venture in the garden in the summer but I bring them in over night .There in an open front vivarium with a wooden panel preventing them from getting out but allows them to see whats going on. It's about 3feet wide by 3feet back by 1foot high. Inside the viv I use a mixture of sand and sterile potting compost and I provide them with lots of things to climb on and hide under. They can grow to about 8-9inches and live upto 50 years.
