Well, if you use a natural substrate like what Andy Highfield of Tortoise Trust recommends, it is a 50/50 mixture of sterile potting soil (no perlite, chemicals, or fertilizers) and washed playground sand. If the sand it really brite white the tortoise may try to eat it (thinking it's calcium) so try to get a darker sand if possible.
