In Reply to: Respiratory Infections... posted by Christine on November 10, 2001 at 13:04:13:

Can RI's be spread from one tortoise to another by human hands? We ALWAYS wash our hands after touching a tortoise and we NEVER touch another before washing our hands. But, is that good enough?

Really paranoid,
~Christine

: Hi All,

: We currently have 2 turtles being treated for RI. As soon as we discovered the infections, we seperated them from all the other tortoises and turtles. They were not in the same enclosures (we do seperate the species), but all the enclosures are close in proximity.

: It's been a couple of weeks since the seperation and we are now seeing signs of a RI in one of our healthy Chinese Box Turtles. We are also hearing squeaking from our Sulcata, who actually always squeaks, but we are now being paranoid.

: My question to you all is this: how are RI's spread? We keep all of our turtles/tortoises indoors now since we have cold weather. Is there anything we can do, other than quarantine/seperate the sick animals, who of course get treatment right away? Is there a way to disinfect the house? I am worried that even though the sick animals are seperate, in another room across the house, there is still some way to infect the healthy guys. Any suggestions?

: Oh, just FYI, the first animal to get sick was a little Chinese Box Turtle we adopted from a local shelter. He had been mauled by a dog and they didn't think he was going to live. When he was healed enough we brought him home. In the shelter, he had been housed with a Gulf Coast Box turtle, who we also brought home. We kept them in a seperate enclosure, away from our other turles and tortoises. But within one day, we saw signs of a RI in both of them and we moved them out immediately. That's how the RI got in the house. ):

: Thanks for any help you can give!

: Peace,
: ~Christine
