Hi,
I have been mulling over adding some tortoises to my little family for a while now, and have finally settled on Russians. Now if someone here with experience could answer some questions I would really appreciate it.
My friend here in WA has a reptile zoo and people keep getting rid of their Russians at his place and he doesn't have the heart to turn them down, so he said he would find some nice ones for me from his bunch. I was wondering how many I could comfortably keep in the following situation:
Wintertime: indoor cattle watering trough sized enclosure,
daily excercise periods when not hibernating
Summertime: Outdoor enclosure 10'x15' very secure buried fence
with screen top to keep out predators. Planted with
yummy stuff.
I was wanting to get opposite genders since their status in the wild probably won't be too great 10 years from now, and captive breed them so we know more about them in captivity and to help take strain off the wild guys. Plus they're so gosh durn cute. I know males are aggressive, can I keep him with a female, or maybe two, year round? Let me know your thoughts about that kind of setup. Thanks!
Lorraine
