Nice friend. Sulcata are sub-Saharan tropical tortoises, they DO NOT hibernate. Any attempt to hibernate them or keep them at hibernation temperatures will probably kill them. The trenches in the yard is true, they are burrows they use to hide out in. Obviously it would have been better to research prior to your purchase, but this website might help to answer some questions>
