In Reply to: What Happened??? HELP PLEASE posted by Katie on October 31, 2001 at 16:36:43:
: The baby redfoot did not make it. He was just too little I guess to make it. There was not much time to do really anything, it was less than a week. I am very sad, and also scared that maybe he had some sort of disease that I could not tell? i am worried that the other tortoises might get the same thing. They are kept in seperate enclosures, but I am still terrified of what this could be. No signs of illness other than not eating, nothing at all. Do baby turtles sometimes just fail to thrive for no reason? I still cannot think of anything that was wrong, there was no time to even forcefeed, and somehow I do not think that would have helped much being that I did not know what is wrong. I doubt anyone will know, but if someone does know what can cause baby tortoises (under 3 inches) to go so quickly, please let me know what it could have been. What kind of diseases it could have been that show no signs or anything. i have looked on websites, found nothing really. It is terrible and sad, but I honestly thought I would have time to find help, there are no vets nearby, but I was looking for one. I thought that worst come to worst the problem would surely would correct itself. I have and have kept for years many tortoises, and nothing like this has ever happened before. I have seen URD in tortoises in the past, and it is obvious what is wrong. He used to eat everyday but my other tortoises easily can go for a week (they are fat anyway!!) without eating and are fine, but they are bigger, he was so small, maybe thats just the way...Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.
Dear Katie,
I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Some babies do just fail to thrive. Keep an eye on your other torts but since you did keep them seperate, you may not have anything to worry about.
