: what is the best tortoise to get as a first one...reasonable size and temperment would be good

: thank you

Pretty much everyone on this forum will ask you a couple questions, so here goes:
How many months out of the year can the tortoise be outside?
Do you have the space to support it as an adult?

I live in the midwest and keep a redfooted tortoise. Their personality is supposedly pretty good compared to other species. They get to be a reasonable size (12-20 lbs. and 12-18 inches in length), not too large like leopards or sulcatas.

They need a temp. gradient from 70 on the cool side to 85 under the basking lamp, and plenty of ferns to hide in! They also eat a variety of greens, and fruits. I bought a 2 month old back in April, and it has grown an inch since then. They grow much slower than sulcatas! Hope this helps.
