Mike,
I have both species which are mentioned, & let me tell you BOTH are 100% different.
The sulcata's have to be just about the friendliest tort you can imagine. But BIG, messy, eat a mountain, & people say distructive (so far I don't).
Whilst the Russians are small, need an escapeproof coral 100% secure. They are personable but no as interactive as the sulcata's.
My sulcata's are similar to having a dog in the garden, hey, my gatesign say's "beware of the tortise"...believe this. They stand guard over the entrance when ppl call..........(they can't run fast to chase the burglars;)

Both are nice torts, but as your in the states, & from what I understand, sulcata's are plentyfull, I'd be tempted to go for the Russains. Get a group of 25 + & go to town on breeding them.

My two cents worth

: Russians are relatively cheap, and not many people captive breed them because they are so cheap to buy..but if you are doing it for the love then it shouldn't matter. Russians have the friendly personality of the sulcata, and the hardiness. They require very similar care, but are smaller and more manageable.
