Many people "up north" keep sulcata, is it the best species to keep in Pa? Although my opinion is not a popular one with people who HAVE to have a sulcata I stand by it. Sulcata get large and unlike the other larger tortoises (redfoots, leopards ect.) houseing them indoors in cold weather is not enjoyable for the tortoise or the keeper (they stink).
It honestly worries me when I see so many teenie-tiny baby sulcatas sold each year to people who have no idea what they are getting into. Sulcata will eventually get sick in temps under 55 or 60 degrees and although this is no problem with a five pound animal, my fifty pound sulcata is another story entirely!
Look into getting one of the Greek or Russian tortoises (Testudo), they are hardy, affordable, and can handle cold temps(they even hibernate!). Good Luck!
: We're interested in getting a sulcata and are wondering if they can be kept in cool climates. We live in Pittsburgh.
