Those tortoises had an obvious nutritional/conditional imbalance. I still don't see where rate is a problem.
Lets look at it this way.
All tortoises that were grown quickly are pyramided and or are malformed therefore all tortoises grown quickly will be pyramided and malformed.
There are serious problems with this statement.
The population that was grown quickly and is not malformed or pyramided never make it to the vet or rehabber. So your assumption is slightly biased.
(I've still yet to see some impirical data to support your anecdotal observations though.)
