I have kept a mature Female Russian since 1988. At one time, I introduced an adolescent male Russian (on loan).
The male Russian has a more highly domed carapace than does the female. Shape of the carapace in addition to size of the tail is a good indicator of sex. The female has a noticably flatter carapace. Also, look for broadening of the shell above the hind legs. My female has "hips" where her shell broadens towards the rear.
