: Like all new tort parents, I am constantly questioning the diet I provide for my leopard hatchling.
: My tort has eaten nothing other than weeds an grasses out of my yard with the exceptoion of some optunia every now and then and a few flowers. I am starting to question the percentage of the diet is weeds.
: Presently Marvin's diet is about 60% to 75% broadleaf weeds. Mostly dandelion, plantain, and clover. The rest is "Grass". (Lots of fescue, bluegrass, crabgrass, and some stuff I can't identify)
: Marvin gets about 1/4 cup of this stuff a day now. I have only had Marvin for 3 months, so it is difficult to tell how well I am doing, but "He" seems happy, alert and healthy. He has had aout a 10% weight gain in this time.
: So, what are the opinions of weeds and grass? Is there a difference? Are weeds more like grocery store greens than grass?
It sounds ideal to me. Yes, the leafy weeds would be comparable to grocery greens, but even better, as they are eaten right where they grow. Remember, you are looking for a high fiber, low protein, low fat diet.... If the animal has free range of an area with appropriate food, it will eat a natural balance without much supervision.
