Salmonella is a treat to young children, the elderly, and people with immune deficienty problems. If you let you children hand it, it is well advised to have them wash their hands afterwards. You handle it, you should wash afterwards. Any contact with ingested fecal matter could be a bad thing. Just keep it out of the kitchen, and keep it clean..you should have no problem.
I never have, and a couple of my torts spend the winter on the kitchen floor.
