Turtles, the aquatic guys, are the ones that are illegal under 4 inches: red eared sliders, painteds, etc. Tortoises, like you got, are not. I think the greater danger with the aquatic types is that the water, if not kept scrupulously clean, can harbor lots of bacteria. It's always a good idea to wash hands both before and after handling any animal. Sometimes children can be more of a danger to small herps than the other way around if they aren't supervised and taught how to handle the animals...dropping, shaking, squeezing, etc. I've seen it happen all too often, so please show your children, and supervise when they want to show their new pet off to friends.
