it's definitly not a tortoise. They sink like a rock when put in water deeper than it can reach. If it's really big, it may be an alligator snapping turtle. It would have a longer tail that kind of looks like a saw. If that's it, make sure you dont put your fingers near its mouth!!! it'll snap a finger right off!!!!!
: There are no true tortoises native to Indiana.
: The closest thing would be a box turtle.

: Please describe the animal to us and maybe we can help. Any turtle native to Indiana will spend at least a little time in the water.

: So tell us about the shape of its shell (is it flat or domed like an army helmet, or maybe it's soft and leathery) the color and pattern of the shell and skin, the shape of its feet (are they webbed or stumpy), how long its shell is, etc.

: Or post a picture if you can.

: Maybe the best thing would be to find a field guide for reptiles at your library and see if you can identify it.
