In Reply to: How can I go about getting a tortoise????? posted by Lacy on October 05, 2001 at 14:54:54:
: Hi all,
: I have 8 box turtles and 9 aquatic turtles, I have had most of them for about 5 years.
Very good, I had many box turtles as a child and they are what led me into giant tortoises. You should have no problem adapting to a land tortoise with your experience.
:I would really love to get a red-footed tortoise. Is it even possible for me to get one?
A red foot ( Geochelone Carbonaria ) is a very hearty tortoise with an interesting personality that will warm your heart. They are a south american breed and require LOTS of water and humidity (My 1st red foot would submerge his head drinking in the tub for 30 straight minutes). They get about 12 inches long, some hit about 17.
The "Giant of Paraguay" I believe is almost 2 feet long.
Keeping that in mind, where you live is a big indicator of the type of tortoise you should have
(i.e. year round temps, how to house in the winter..etc.). I normally always recommend based on where the person lives.
:Do I need any kind of a permit or anything?
CITES, no...where you live..unknown
:About how much is every thing going to cost me?
Tortoise, Lamps, Tank, misters = around $ 250 to $ 300.00 if you are a smart shopper
Check out the link I included to give u some background on them.
Best of luck.
Ciao'
Giovanni
