I agree with Greg, I would do as much research as possible as I can first. There are a lot of different species out there with different needs and diets. They have different requirements than box turtles and can never be housed together with them.

You will have to buy a heating lamp/fixture and a fluorescent Reptisun 5.0 bulb/fixture. The Reptisun bulb provides important UV rays for shell developent and cost around $25. The bulb should also be replaced at least once a year. You can easily spend $75-$100 just for the tortoise set up alone! Look to spend another $100 to $200 for the tortoise itself.

Remember whenever buying a turtle or tortoise it should be a life long commitment. It is your responsibility to care for these animals and buying one shouldn't be on a whim.

If you feel you find a tortoise species you would like to buy look on the classifieds on Kingsnake or turtletimes. I would also buy a captive bred tortoise since they are always healthier. Good luck.
