As a general rule, we don't suscribe to the idea of a "starter tortoise". A "starter" would be something disposable that it doesn't matter if you make mistakes with. So, given that position, any tortoise could be a "starter tortoise" (as in, one to start with) provided enough research was done prior to getting the tortoise. Oddly enough, prior research is NOT enough as new things are being learned about animal husbandry every day. That is why we "lurk" here, to get new opinions and learn new things.
We "started" with a Russian Tortoise who is still with us after 9 years. We also have our two sulcatas, a Chinese Box Turtle, a couple of aquatic turtles, a Bearded Dragon and, as you may recall from the venomous forum a few years back, "several" snakes. I won't even begin to list our non-herp animals.
The Partridge and its Pear Tree won't arrive until Tuesday. LOL
