: I'm considering adding a turtle or tortoise to my "zoo". I babysat a Russian Tortoise a couple of times last year and loved the little guy. But I also understand that Chinese Box Turtles are pretty good-natured and hardy.
: Can anyone fill me in on either in a practical, day-to-day way, and also, is there another type of tortoise I should be looking at? The requirements are:
: 1. must be hardy
: 2. must be non-aquatic
: 3. shouldn't be shy or easily stressed (I do presentations)
: 4. should need a fairly arid environment (I can do desert and arid, but don't have the energy for something subtropical!)
: 5. shouldn't get too big (star tortoise is too big!)
: Thanks!
I keep both, and would strongly advice you to get a Russian. I keep several species of tortoise and Russians are my favourite. They are hardy, strong, very active and have strong personalities as far as tortoises go. I mean they are very responsive and will recognise their owners. They may not be the prettiest tortoises in terms of color and markings, but their character makes up for it.
Chinese box are shier and they need a semi-tropical, humid environment. I keep one CB, she took some time to adapt and its food requirements are a bit more complicated (eats in the water).
Get a Russian, just make sure it's healthy, feels heavy when held and eats well (they are voracious eaters when healthy).
Believe me, if you get a good one you'll become a Russian fan for life (I have 6).
BTW, nice web site. If you do get a Russian, tell us how it's doing!
