Theresa,
We have a long history of using literary references and television characters for the names of our pets. Niles and Daphne just seemed to fit considering the characters from Frazier. Of course, they have grown and Niles is no shrinking violet but Daphne remains a little spitfire. We also have a cockatiel named Doorknob after a Kender in the Dragonlance fantasy novel series. In the past we have had a Cocker Spaniel named Tika (from the same book series), a cat named Tesseract (from A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle) and so on.
