My tortoises are 18 months old and starting to wind down with the cooler weather. Zelda is a beautiful Greek & Molly is a hermann with a missing scute.

Molly has always been more outgoing & reacts to my presence. She enjoys having her head rubbed & sometimes I just leave my finger still & let her do the rubbing, not unlike a cat. She is the most active & always the last one to settle down for the evening. When out in the yard grazing, she heads due south without fail. I'll retrieve her & bring her back & no matter which direction I place her, she turns & goes south.

Until a couple of months ago, Zelda had the personality of a stone. Yeah, she's pretty & all that, but what a boring creature! That's not the case any more. She's only active twice a day, as soon as morning sun reaches the pen & late in the afternoon. The rest of the time she is buried in the Lizard Litter under the half log. When in motion, she moves fast! All of her waking time is spent pacing the perimeter of her pen. She always heads due north when out in the yard grazing. I have to wonder if they're tapping into the magnetic flux lines of the earth since their directions of travel are so consistent.

Living with tortoises is such a rewarding experience. Having a place such as this to rattle on about it is a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say.
