: 1. must be hardy
: 2. must be non-aquatic
: 3. shouldn't be shy or easily stressed (I do presentations)
: 4. should need a fairly arid environment (I can do desert and arid, but don't have the energy for something subtropical!)
: 5. shouldn't get too big (star tortoise is too big!)

I would advise against an Asian box, since they are at least semiaquatic or need a high humidity environment. They are also very hard to come buy as anything but wildcaught, and there are amny reasons not to buy WC.

Russians seem to fit all your needs, although the same caveat exists here - they are usually WC. Wild caught russians commonly experience troubles when adapting to captive environments.

I would recommend that you look into the possibilities of getting a Hermanns tortoise (T. hermanni). These tortoises are very hardy, are not reliant upon humid environments, don't stress easily and are easy (cheap) to find as captive bred. They do not grow very large - average adult weight is 2-3 pounds.
