A couple of years ago a coworker went wild when my 1st tortoise arrived at work via UPS. He just HAD to have one so we went online & he decided on a pair of Russian tortoises. I knew nothing about them but thought a pair for $65 was a deal. He set them up in a 20 gallon aquarium & was bored with them in a couple of months because they didn't do anything. I sent him every link I came across regarding Russian tortoises & told him they needed more room. "Why? They don't ever do anything." Later he sold them to a neighbor. Today I learned that the female died about a week ago.
Their legs were splayed out, too & they rarely ever drew their heads in. It was sad, & made me wonder about the lives those tortoises had led. No way of telling how old they were but his shell was extremely scuffed & chipped. They probably had traveled farther than most people ever do.
By the way, according to a map on a German tortoise website, these guys range from Iran, Kazachstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, to parts of China. If we see any tortoises on the news from chasing bin Laden, chances are they will be testudo horsfieldii.
Good luck with your tortoises, Susan.
