Paul, first of all do you know what kind of grass your "ground cover" is made up of? Are you sure this type of grass is not only safe for tortoises but untreated with chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides? If you are allowing your tortoises grazing on fertilized or treated grass, that can be very bad for them, and a symptom might be diarrhea. Second theory is that they might have picked up a worm or parasite outside during grazing. I highly doubt that access to water is going to result in immediate diarrhea but if it clears up in a few days with the tray out, then you'll know! Regular access to water is okay for them, but if they are spending hours running in it or sitting in it...could lead to increased hydration which would obviously cause runny stools. The best tortoise and turtle book is called The Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises & Fresh Water Turtles by A.C. Highfield and can be purchased at www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com websites...runs about $45-$50 but is a bible and well worth the money. Andy Highfield is the Director of Tortoise Trust International and is an expert on tortoises...check out the website below and e-mail there if you have further questions we can't answer..good luck!!!
