Sounds like you may have adopted a box turtle. Check out the link for pictures and care info. If it is a box turtle it needs water to soak in, so make sure you provide a shallow dish, it can easily enter and exit.

Can it close it's shell all the way? Box turtles have hinges which allow them to close the shell.
Also how many claws does it have on it's back legs?
