Agreed...it's probably too dry and hot. As referenced below, you might want to think about switching from a vivarium enclosure to a more suitable and breatheable enclosure like a Rubbermaid tub for now. That will cut down on the amount of heat retained in the enclosure and probably take care of the eyes...
: I think it's a good idea to change the stuff. I always tend towards the natural stuff if I can't keep them on carpeting. Keep in mind that it is probably getting cooler where you're at. Well, what happens is that you add heat and dry out the environment. You might consider adding a moist area where he can hang out if he likes.
