I recently purchased a female redfoot tortoise that is supposed to gravid. She appears to be healthy, very heavy, bright eyes, alert, no signs of respiratory infection, but she doesn't want to eat.She looks at the food but then walks away. She also seems that she likes to soak in her water. I have read that loss of appetite can occur when she is gravid. Do you think this is what is happening? Is there anyway to tell? I don't want her to get eggbound and I am almost ready to run her to the vet for a checkup.
Does anyone know what they prefer as an egglaying substrate? I am thinking of a 40 gal plastic stock tank half full of good garden soil, moistened, and with a basking light over one end. Will this work? Thank you for any advice thatyou can give me.
