: What is the best substrate for hatchling? and what is the best diet for them som they grow up to be healthy and have a nice smooth shell? thanx.

Newspaper, rubber shelf lining, rabbit pellets, I've heard of all of these being used for substrate with good results.

The 'tough love' method of feeding tends to produce the best growth... slow and steady. Feed mainly grasses and other 'tough' greens, dont feed much in the way of other veggies. Use fruit ONLY as a treat, a few bites per week. Make sure to provide a good source of calcium and vitamins, and make sure it gets a lot of UVB (sunlight, or good artificial source)

I'm sure the other folks will have more specific info for you, but this gives you a good idea. Try searching for websites with more specific leo info, there are a few out there.

Take a look at:

www.tortoise.org
www.tortoisetrust.org
www.turtletimes.org

Look in the care sections, tons of info there.
